Aikido Sparring: How Long Until I’m Able To Defend Myself?
How long do u think it will take before I am really able to defend myself against like a mugger or a bully etc. I want to you like be able to put him on the ground, no problem. I am talking about like a big guy but who is NOT trained to fight. Also will i learn some basic wrestling moves/pins after the sankyo or nikkyo? And how long do u think it will take to be able to spar with a trained fighter, not win, but at least give him/her competition.
* Please don’t say it depends on the dojo or something(I know it does, but would still like a time frame.
* I am not planning on quitting after the time you say, I am planning on continuing this throughout my life, I am 14
* I train about 2-4 times/week. it depends on my schedule.
Any other info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!

Aikido Sparring: What Should I Expect In Judo Class?
Hi, I’m a 15 year old girl. I weigh about 120, and stand at about 5’2… or 5’3.
I’m about to join a judo club, that is reputable… Although it may not look it.
What I’m wondering is, what should I expect the first class, or the first few classes? Will I just have to jump right in? Will I have to spar the first class? Etc. Is there anything I should be concerned about or know?
I’m not new to martial arts, I’ve done Karate, Kung fu, Muay Thai, Aikido/Jujitsu, and Jiujitsu. However, all of those, except for Karate and Jiujitsu, weren’t for a significant amount of time. Will any of these help me in Judo?
I understand that Judo came from Jujitsu, and Jiujitsu came from Judo, etc.
Is there anything I should prepare myself for? Will this teach my self discipline? In Judo, do you learn about "zanshin"? Do you get a mind and body spiritual connection? Will I lose weight?
Sorry for all of the questions, I’m just curious. I’ve been doing non-stop research. I just need to hear things a lot.
Thank you.

Aikido Sparring: How Do I Stop My TKD Friend From Being So Aggressive With Me?
I’ve been practicing Kung Fu for 8 years now and my friend has been doing TKD for almost 2 years now. She is already a red belt. I do not want her to become too "big headed" so should I just congratulate her on her belt? I think it was a little too quick to gain her red belt though. Her college where they practice TKD is more of a sport form.
I always seem to get upset when she wants to spar me cause I don’t want to end up hurting her. (I don’t mean to sound arrogant)
But what should I do to refrain her from wanting to "spar" with me?
This is not a question of what martial arts is better, I respect every martial arts because I have also studied Jujitsu and currently Aikido
Also my dad teaches kung fu and we learn different variety of punches, kicks, blocks and many different self defense techniques.
Should I not get upset for her wanting to do TKD?
I know that many martial arts teach self discipline but I get very upset when she wants to spar. How can I deal with this? and How can I talk to her out of this?
..I honestly don’t think she is that great in TKD..
I do not have anything against sparring but I don’t want her to become so "big headed" about it.

Aikido Sparring: I’m in China… BaguaZhang Or Something Else?
I’m currently in China, and to be honest I don’t really know what my MA resources are. I know that I’m in a small city, and I have a lot of free time. I’ve always wanted to do a few CMA’s, such as Baguazhang (Maybe Cheng style) or something similar.
I know there’s a lot of debate over CMA’s because of the way they train. I’ll admit I’m a huge critic on a lot of things. I use to do Aikido and as much as I liked doing it, I constantly questioned some of the practical applications when people resisted. Having a wrestling background before Aikido I could tell what would work and what wouldn’t. Considering Aikido is suppose to use minimal effort, what would be the point of learning something you’d have to absolutely force when you could probably learn something more useful that required less?
The point I’m making is, if I could find a Baguazhang school where they do practice and spar at normal or near-normal speeds does the contents of the style look practical in anyway? If I find one and do it for fun, hey I’ll do it for fun since what else can I do right? But if I’m looking for something besides wrestling to supplement some striking skills in case I ever need them, would something like Baguazhang deliver (again, granted a school that actually spars and doesn’t just drill.)
If not, what arts should I look for here? And what would be a chinese equivalent folk style wrestling/any grappling?

Aikido Sparring: I’m Sparring Soon, Is This Stuff Good To Study For My Spar While I Train?
So basically, I’m 14 and my “mate/enemy” wants to spar me because he thinks he can have me. I have done a bit of Judo and Boxing and currently do Shodokan Aikido. I am studying a bit of kick-boxing, elite force street-fighting and anything to do with winning a fight. Does anyone have any good advice? (I can currently do round house kick and the kung fu wire kick and some others) Most Friends think I will win, should I fight him?

Aikido Sparring: Martial Arts, Which One Should I Try Out For?
I want to try a new discipline in martial arts. When i was younger I used to be in Taekwondo. I had great kicks and forms. In sparring I was very competitive. I haven’t practiced in years but i did pick up boxing though.
I was interested in aikido, kung fu, karate.
Now I know there are alot more, but which would you recommend even one not listed?
Yeah I wasn’t hoping to become great at it. And I think any discipline right will be hard transition since both my knees are messed a bit due to football.

Aikido Sparring: Does This Sound Like A McDojo To You?
Aikido Sparring
Yea, I know I asked this question before, but I feel like I didn’t give enough information about it, so here it goes. ^^
Alright, It’s an Aikido dojo which has both adult and kid classes three times a week, (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday) and are all 1 hour and 30 minute classes. In June, their opening it on Mondays as well.
I have been going here for three days so far, and I like what they teach. Lots of sparring (LOTS), and the sensei really take their time and work with the students. They fix the mistakes you make and tell you what to do.
The classes are 60$ a month, plus you get a free uniform. There are no hidden fees, but you do have to pay for the exams. The exam for a yellow belt is 40$. (Canadian dollars). You are also not required to pay any down payment or sign a contract to be in it for a certain amount of time.
Also, the classes aren’t too crowded. Some people don’t come every single class, but usually, there’s an average of 9-15 people at the dojo every class (in the adult class, the one I’m in).
I have never seen a little kid running around in a Black belt, and there isn’t too many black belts in my class. (Only about 2/3).
The sensei says it takes the average person about a month to make it to the second rank, (in this case, Yellow). He also said it takes the average person around three years to make it to the first degree black belt.
It’s Yoshinkan style Aikido.
It seems pretty traditional to me, with the Japanese speaking and bowing and stuff.
The belt system goes like this:WHITE, 1 YELLOW, 2 YELLOW, 1 ORANGE, 2 ORANGE, 1 GREEN, 2 GREEN, 1 BROWN , 2 BROWN, 3 BROWN, BLACK (….)
Here’s the link to their website, (it’ll tell you a lot).

The sensei(s) are also really nice, funny, encouraging, and love to joke around. They also don’t get mad really easily.
Well, what do you think? o.o
Thanks for taking your time to read all that by the way ^^ .
Also, the school has been opened for 4 years.
You also don’t have to pay for re-tests if in some chance you fail.
I could be wrong, but I always thought “sparring” meant facing other students with what you learned. o.O
