INCREDIBLE: Martial arts masters at the Taekwondo World Championships

do you think Bruce lee was overrated?

I give him credit for mainstreaming the arts and for telling martial artists that they should lift weights and hit a heavy bag. But Bruce Lee as a fighter? He beat up a black belt, and he fought to a 20-minute draw against some young kung fu guy. Those are his only two documented fights. He did not fight professionally. And he could have. He could have boxed in the US or done full contact in Brazil or Japan. I do not say he was a joke, but saying that he was the best "fighter" is like saying that Judge Judy knows more than the people on the Supreme Court! Yes, Bruce may have been a great teacher. But teaching fighting is not itself fighting. I think with what we know now about muay thai, BJJ, and MMA, people need to stop obssessing about Bruce Lee and jeet kune do.
And jeet kune do is not revolutionary. The Brits at the end of the 19th century had a hybrid art called Bartitsu. Boxer Jack Dempsey developed an armed forces hybrid art combining boxing and judo.
Kajukenbo was a hybrid combination of karate, judo, jujitsu, kenpo, chinese boxing, western boxing,
eskrima, and tang soo do. And unlike Bruce Lee and his students, the kajukenbo guys really fought.
So is it not time for people to stop this immature hero-worship of Lee and start concerning themselves with their own training?
There were 100s of true masters of any number of arts, in Bruce’s time, who could have beaten Bruce Lee easily. There are probably 14 year olds in Thailand now who could have kicked Bruce’s butt.
I wonder how many of the Bruce Lee fanboys on message forums like this have never even been in a fight, hit a heavy bag, broken a board, or done any live sparring- don’t you?

Training and self-control?

My friend is a karate-ka and his school trains full contact with no gear. There is this individual that is a fellow student that, according to him, lacks self-control with his techniques. On numerous occasions he has hit my friend in the face and though many times it’s been an accident, my friend fears that his lack of self-control could potentially hurt the younger students as sometimes the instructors will spar with them. By young I mean individuals from the ages of 12 to 16. Now, recently, this guy broke my friend’s nose. The reason why I tell you this is because I asked him if this could go against the guy when he goes to test for his second degree black belt. He said it might not because his kyoshi teaches things for real life situations. I feel that, as a martial artist, there is more to martial arts than just being able to hurt people. My question: Should this guy be allowed to test for his second degree?
@Liondancer – Well as far as I know, his school is a respectable school. I like to think this is just one bad apple out of the whole batch. But I agree, upon first impressions, I’d think the same thing. My friend knows self-control…but this other guy just doesn’t and that bothers me. It’s nice to know you can do incredible things but if you can’t hold back a punch, that shows lack of control. Lack of control in my book is a lack of discipline.

How could I get into the olympics for taekwondo?

I’m 17 and have been doing taekwondo since I was 5 years old and am a 3rd degree black belt and for a few years I’ve had an aspiration to compete in the olympics. I do WTF taekwondo which is olympic style taekwondo which is pretty good but I just want to know how to get into the olympics. All the info I can really give is I’m 145 pounds, ‘m 5’9" and in rank I’m #2 in the U.S. in my weight class and In my dojang (dojo) Im the 3rd fastest out of every student. The 2nd being another 3rd degree and the 1st being my master which is just became a 6th degree and he’s #1 in the U.S. in our weight class. He’s 145 too. Every tournament I’ve ever been to I came in first place in sparring. The only time I didn’t was when I had competed but I was away for about 6 or so months when from tearing a tendon in my achilles from an attempt to do a 900 kick. I came in 2nd but go really close to winning. So basically all I really want to know is how to get into the olympics for taekwondo.

Taekwondo testing tips and requirements.?

I’m currently at a red belt and will be testing soon for a red/black belt. At my academy, we have to know our Patterns (poomse from white to current level), Self defense ( from white belt to our current level), 1 step sparring, 3 step sparring, and be able to break a board. At my academy you have to do a certain amount of pushups, sit-ups, leg lifts, and squats to pass the physical health test. How many do you think I should have to do at my level? I’m also 15 years old.

What kind of punching bag should I get?

Hi, I’m Kimmy and i need a punching bag. I’m 13 and a black belt in taekwondo, and I kinda feel that, after I stopped a couple years ago, I need to start using a punching bag (I can’t start lessons again and I don’t have a sparring partner). What kind of punching bag should I get? I’ll be punching, kicking… Everything.

is this a legal taekwondo dojo?

SO i have being training in this itf taekwondo dojo for about a half a year now and its pretty good. The head instructor is pretty strict and would disciple the student if they are not paying attetion, fooling around and stuff he gives a warning first before punishing it he makes u do pushups around 50least some times if you don’t answer back at his punishment(like say yes sir) he would make you do another 50 also sometimes he would kick people out of his class either thier being rude disrespectful only if its more than 3 times in a class .
Oh there are no black belt clubs or contract the price is ok 75 dollars a month but it would be cheaper if u buy 3month 6month or a year at a time 2 class per week around 45minutes. The instructors would show us the technique that hes teacher to us carefully like every class also he would tell his to listen kick harder faster and stuff.Oh when we`re sparring he would always tell us to use the combos that he taught us to use it on our opponents.I do see people that are black belt that are younger than 16 but the men has to pay the bills and usually the younger black belts are age fromt 12-15 and yes people do fail tests

Should I quit taekwondo?

I really dislike going to taekwondo. It’s a bit too asian for me.. not because taekwondo is asian, it’s because all the studfents in my class are all frigin ultra asians who think they’re the coolest kids in the world.
I really do NOT like sparring becase I get really nervous and most of the time suck.
But I love the feeling I get after class after a big workout..

Should I quit because I just lost my passion for it. or keep doing it?

Did you have any similar experiences?
i’m a third degree black belt by the way
