Martial Arts Odyssey: San Da (San Shau) Fighters (Part 1)
Fighting in the Malaysian Fighting Championships (MFC) Brooklyn Monk, Antonio Graceffo, cross trains with San Da champion and formidable MMA fighter, Raymond Tiew. San Da, Chinese kickboxing, has many advantages over Muay Thai. Since most MMA fighters have cross trained in Muay Thai, a San Da fighter has the advantage of looking different and surprising his opponent with unexpected attacks. San Da utilizes more straight kicks than most Muay Thai, with knockouts often coming from straight kicks to the head and face. San Da fighters are experts at catching an opponent’s kick and throwing him. Most MMA fighters would then follow the man to the ground and win by choke, submission, or ground and pound. Raymond prefers to remain standing and punch the downed opponent. One of the coolest techniques in San Da is the lift and throw, the body slam. The primary advantage that Muay Thai fighters have had over San Da fighters in MMA has been experience. There are more opportunities for Muay Thai guys to fight each year than there are for San Da fighters, unless they live in China. But the art, San Da, is worth taking a look at. For all intents and purposes, eskrima, arnis and kali all refer to the same family of Filipino weapon-based martial arts. In Luzon they may go by the name of arnis, arnis de mano, sinawali, pagkalikali, panandata (usage of weapons), didya, kabaroan (blade usage) and kaliradman. In the Visayas and Mindanao, these martial arts have been referred to as eskrima, kali and kalirongan. Lars Lömke Kutaw and Silat are separate martial arts that have been practiced in the islands. When the Spaniards began colonizing the Philippines, they saw an already-developed weapons-based martial arts practiced by the natives. The name eskrima came from the Spanish word for “fencing” (ie, any form of hand-to-hand combat with bladed weapons). After the decree prohibiting the native to carry full-sized swords (such as the Kris and the Kamplian), the Maharlika (the ancient nobility class) preserved the art. To circumvent the decree, some practitioners used sticks made out of rattan rather than swords, as well as small knives wielded like a sword. It can be traced back from Tome Prises Suma Oriental to Lapu-lapu. As eskrima …
