Martial Arts Odyssey: San Da (San Shau) Fighters (Part 1)

Fighting in the Malaysian Fighting Championships (MFC) Brooklyn Monk, Antonio Graceffo, cross trains with San Da champion and formidable MMA fighter, Raymond Tiew. San Da, Chinese kickboxing, has many advantages over Muay Thai. Since most MMA fighters have cross trained in Muay Thai, a San Da fighter has the advantage of looking different and surprising his opponent with unexpected attacks. San Da utilizes more straight kicks than most Muay Thai, with knockouts often coming from straight kicks to the head and face. San Da fighters are experts at catching an opponent’s kick and throwing him. Most MMA fighters would then follow the man to the ground and win by choke, submission, or ground and pound. Raymond prefers to remain standing and punch the downed opponent. One of the coolest techniques in San Da is the lift and throw, the body slam. The primary advantage that Muay Thai fighters have had over San Da fighters in MMA has been experience. There are more opportunities for Muay Thai guys to fight each year than there are for San Da fighters, unless they live in China. But the art, San Da, is worth taking a look at. Martial Arts Odyssey: Bokator MMA Fight Prep (Part 2)

In the summer of 2011, Antonio Graceffo agreed to fight in Mayhem II MMA tournament in Malaysia. He trained the first two weeks in Thailand, then returned to Cambodia to do fight prep with the Khmer Bokator team and with Paddy Carson at Paddy’s Fight Club, Phnom Penh. Eventually, he arranged for the Khmer Bokator team to also send three fighters to Malaysia to compete. This would be the first time any of the four had fought in an MMA fight. An unconventional team, Antonio would be turning 44 a few days before the tournament. The four, Antonio Graceffo, Tun Serey, Kong Ravy, and Say Tevin trained together, grappling, every morning at the Bokator Academy, assisted by Sarin Sebire, the captain of the French Bokator team, who acted as grappling coach. After ten days of training, Antonio was offered the chance to prepare at K-1 Fight Factory, Phnom Penh. This three part video series shows the training at the Bokator Academy. The K-1 training will appear in a separate series. Antonio Graceffo is self-funded and needs donation to continue his writing and video work. Mayhem II MMA TournamentPart 3: Bokator Fighter, Say Tevin (Cambodia): preliminary fight

Mayhem II is a mixed martial arts fighting champions ship in Malaysia, sponsored by Muayfit in Selangor. On September 11, 2011, The Cambodian Bokator MMA team, consisting of Tun Serey, Kong Ravi, Say Tevin and Antonio Graceffo (The Brooklyn Monk) fought in the event. Antonio won his first fight, but lost his second. Tun Serey was the hero of the day, winning two bouts and earning a second place trophy for Cambodia. The event was highly significant because it was the first time the Cambodian Bokator team ever fought outside of Cambodia and the first time they ever participated in MMA. In Cambodia, they practice traditional Bokator which includes kick boxing and grappling, but the style had to be adjusted for MMA competition. Antonio owes his victory to both, the years of Bokator training as well as a month of intensive modern MMA training, sponsored by K-1 Fight Factory Phnom Penh and Team Minetti. Even participating was a great victory for the Khmer team as they were able to bring their art to the world. The whole team, including Antonio, plans to continue training and fighting MMA. Martial Arts Odyssey: Bokator Siem Reap (Part 1)

In the shadow of Angkor Wat, Antonio Graceffo travels to Siem Reap, Cambodia to train with Pirum, the lead instructor at the first major Bokator academy outside of Phnom Penh. Grand Master San Kim Saen had a vision of sending emissaries to all of the corners of Cambodia, and eventually all over the world, to help spread and preserve the ancient Cambodian martial art. The school in Siem Reap is extremely important because Siem Reap enjoys more than twenty times as much tourism as Phnom Penh. The Siem Reap school is the one more likely to be visited by foreign students. If you go to see Angkor Wat, please stop by and see Pirum. You can take some lessons, see a demonstration or stay and do serious study, earning a first certificate in Bokator.
