Opinions about no contact sparring and competitions in TAE KWON DO instead of light or full contact?
I saw at tkd school one time that did no contact sparring. I thought that was odd because all I was familiar with was light and full contact sparring in tae kwon do.
They explained to me this is "traditional tae kwon do." So, did some research, their are other schools out there that say and do the same thing. They refere to themselves as "traditional tkd" and do no contact sparring and competitions only (or for the most part anyway).
Is no contact sparring really a bunch of bunk? Is it somehow "better" than, say light or, even full contact?
I was reading a tkd book, by a 4th degree Korean black belt, written in 1983, that totally advocated this method of tae kwon do over light and full contact. He said light contact was unrealistic. It was unrealistic because they score a point then stop, over and over, until 3 points is acculmulated. He said no contact keeps a sparring match fluid, going, non stop, in contrast. He mentioned that full contact, was artificial because of all the safety gear they wear. He says in no contact they wear no protective armour which is more realistic. He also said no contact can still make hard contact if need be, in self defense, if they supplement by hitting hard objects (ie a heavy bag or tree).
Is traditional no contact tae kwon do worth it compared to the others? Is their a method to the madness? Do they have any real advantages over the other types?
Sparring tips?
I am a yellow belt in Tae-kwon Do and I really want to get better at sparring. I can usually get in a few jabs to the solar plexus and head, and occasionally I can even use a kick. But almost everyone in my class is highschool age or older, so they’re taller and stronger than me. I am 14. What can i do to improve my sparring skills?
I block like cray and yet it seems that they always are able to get at my head. I keep my hands up the whole time and keep them where they should be! The people just go in and knock my hands away o matter how hard I try to keep them in place!
Transitioning into boxing?
I have 10 years of Tae Kwon Do training. My gym recently opened up a boxing facility. I’ve wanted to learn about boxing, now that I have the facility this is a great chance. Only they just basically have the bags; they don’t offer training. It’s really just intended for cardio and to fill up part of the aerobics room in the basement. But they do have a nice selection of equipment including heavy bags ranging from 30 lb. bags up to 150 lbs., free hanging as well as those stationed from the ground, speed bags and striking bags. I have the martial arts strikes down. But I would like to learn the boxing style of fighting. Does anyone have training suggestions or some good resources (books, videos, ect.) that they could recommend? I’m not in an area that offers boxing training so I don’t have access to a trainer. That’s what you get for living in the sticks! I’d have to basically train myself. Thanks for the help!
Flexibilty for ladies in martial arts?
Is that 1 thing that ladies in martial arts have as an advantage that make them better at martial arts then men? I’m asking because I had a light sparring match with this one girl in college who does tae kwon do-we used proper protection equipment-and it was surprising. She kept backing me up with these really high kicks aimed at my face. She used both legs. Her kicks were high up too. Later on I tried doing some of those same kicks, but I couldn’t get my legs that high up. She mentioned how her instructor said that a lot of females are potentially better because of flexibility. I found that out for sure!
Starting and running a succesful Martial Arts Studio?
Hello, I am a blackbelt in Tae kwon do, and have been practicing martial arts for 10 years now. I am 21 years old, and I want to open up my own martial arts school. I want to teach a Tae Kwon Do class for children, and have other instructors teach martial arts that they specialize in while renting out the school for the hour that they use.
I have purchased equipment for sparring, and practice, and have about 5 students that I currently teach in a place in which I rent time for in another school.
I am very interested in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Judo, so I will be also wanting to purchase good martial arts or grappling mats.
Any Ideas on how to successfully start and run a good Dojo?
Boxing routine/training resources?
I’ve practice Tae Kwon Do for 10 years but would like to add some boxing training to my workout also. The martial arts has worked well; but it doesn’t really incorperate other training such as weight training, cardio and diet into the routine as boxing does. I mean when I do Tae Kwon Do, the martial arts itself is the cardio and training.
I’m looking for suggestions on good books, videos, or websites to start a training routine. I’m not familiar with boxing. Something a bit more specific than to "watch Rocky," haha. I do have a gym set up for Tae Kwon Do including a hanging heavy bag, gloves, weight set, and jump ropes. I also have access to a gym when I’m home from college for the summers that includes a boxing gym (no trainers, just the equipment–many different heavy bags, speed bags, ect.)
I realize you need a sparring partner and to shadow box to properly learn boxing; but I’m doing this more for the training aspect. I’m not going to be entering a boxing match anytime soon! Thanks for any advice.

Tae Kwon Do Competition Tips?
I just tested for my black belt. In Tae Kwon do. I haven’t received it yet and wont before the competition. I will be competing as a Deputy Black belt.
I will be competing in
forms ( KO ROYO )
sparing ( 18 + division )
and breaking ( 6 boards)
I have competed and won before in forms both creative and PALGWE OH JANG as a blue belt. so Im familiar with Competition and I am confidant. But Im looking for some tips form people who also compete and judge.
This will be my first time sparing in competition. we spar at my school but it isn’t a focus for us. we learn alot more than just TKD and we dont spar alot. once a week MAYBE. so I need a few tips for competition.
breaking I am confident with. what Im looking for is suggestions for breaks that would score good points.
