Martial Arts Sparring (highlights)

This is a sparring demo of the martial art of hanmudo. It is a Korean martial art which has techniques from judo, taekwondo, hapkido and other Korean martial arts. The demo includes throws, sweeps, locks, kicks and punches. Its not the best in the world but we only had 5 minutes to think of something.

Is my Taekwondo place a McDojo?

I just started Taekwondo yesterday and I’m worried if my place is a McDojo. Here’s what it compares to a McDojo.

1.) My friend is a black belt and he told me that he that it takes about 3 years to get a black belt. But he is actually been doing TKD for a long time so its probably skill

2.) There was a contract I had to sign, and with it was also a health form. I signed for six months and they said at least by then if your really good, you can get a green belt (at my place, they have fusion colors like Black and Red which pretty much is in between a belt. None of that camo belt BS) But for one week it would cost about which isn’t bad for one week.

3.) It is not a commercial place like ATA and there were zero franchises.

4.) I heard that with the little kids, he slows the belt leveling progress down, but with the adults, he does it normally. The approximate time to level up to a Yellow belt is 1 month if you are okay)

5.) There were mirrors, but not so many

6.) The instructors are actually Korean, and the grandmaster is around 65-70 years old as I can tell. They also competed and won first place once in the WTF (hehe…WTF)

7.) The black belts are actually good.

8.) There were American/Korean flags.

9.) They spar on Thursdays and Fridays, and they do sparring all day on those days and they are full contact sparring

10.) But unlike McDojos like ATA, people did actually look like they were doing martial arts, and people do sweat puddles (not literally)

11.) Lastly, The teachers weren’t full of themselves and weren’t selfish and bragging

Give me an answer on what you think

TKD AND KARATE SPARRING please comment?

Ive been taking tkd for 2 years and have progresses quickly, one thing that has kept me from getting a split skull or broken nose or ear damage or anything of that nature is my hands. i keep them up while sparring and its something that we are very anal about at my dojan. I was browsing you-tube and watch sparring matched to see amazing sparring and good technique but there is one thing i notice ever one has there hands down. yes yes i know in many sparring matches you cant score points with hands but they are still there for protection. why are all these martial artist sparring with there hands down. you would think that a black belt would know. and they wonder why there opponent gets so many points idk, want good answers.

Taekwondo/Martial Arts sparring?

I’ve been doing TKD in San Francisco for about 3 yrs. Im 12 and the classes i usually take r full of little kids and other people who dont rly take TKD seriously. So, since I actually practice and take classes seriously, I am much better at TKD than the others and I actually know how to apply the moves I am taught. My instructor doesn’t really teach self-defense or do sparring, so I practice both by myself on my own.

I was wondering if anyone knows a place in San Francisco where I can participate in competitions, tournaments, or sparring sessions without having to pay much for classes. I was thinking of something that I could do on weekends, or maybe a legit tournament sort of like those in the movies "Karate Kid" or "Enter the Dragon", sumthing like that.

I need quite a few Taekwondo combos. can anybody help me?

i will have my first tkd sparring tournament in 3 weeks. i only have like a couple of combos. i need help.

need a little help/advice on making a decision about taekwondo and mma. what should i do?

Ok so i’ve been doing taekwondo for about two and a half years now, im four ranks (or a year and a bit) off black belt. i do love taekwondo, its great fun and sparring is most enjoyable. its not a mcdojo as we are trained by a korean man with a 8th degree black belt in both WTF stlye taekwondo and Hapkido. I love the people and my master at the dojang and really wanted to get black belt.

but at the same time, i love all martial arts and want to expand my horizons to others. i also love mixed martial arts and ufc etc etc and often have full contact mma matches in the backyard (lol). so I recently discovered that then next town over has an mma gym. it has classes in mauy thai, kickboxing, BJJ and strength and fitness (which i am very interested in as i have alot of trouble putting on any weight and/or muscle). ontop of that the mma gym costs 25 a week with unlimited access (upto 15 classes a week, not to mention you can probobaly use the gym anytime as long as its open between classes). which is WAY better compared to taekwondo’s per lesson once a week with no real facilities (we do it in a school hall/ indoor b-ball court) not to mention gradings cost 50 each and u need to pay 55 for insurance once a year.

so my dilema is i cant afford a week to do mma AND taekwondo. yet i still do like taekwondo and dont want to "betray" my master and dojang. but mma is so much cheaper and teaches so much more.. WHAT SHOULD I DO??

and plz no answers telling me how "unneffective" tkd is etc etc.

Sparring Tips?

I’m 5’7” and i’m going to my first tkd sparring tourney in august. i know i’m short and will be going against taller opponents. i’m 25 and just a white belt w/yellow tip. Just looking for some tips to sparring someone taller than me since almost everyone will be taller than me.

and also, what are the weight classes? It’s WTF taekwondo. I’m at 184 right now and i’m wondering what class i’ll be in and if i’d have to cut weight or anything. Serious replies only please.

Where can I purchase this Fight Science-1 DVD?

Here is the last question I posed: I’m looking for a DVD of a program that I watched years ago. I thought it was "Fight Science", but I just bought it, and that’s not it. This one uses the electronic/scientific equipment to assess martial art strikes, like the one I’m looking for does, but the one I’m looking for looked at different moves from different martial art styles. The one I just bought (titled "Fight Science", from National Geographic), does not do that. It looks at MMA, self-defense, and special ops. Interesting, but not the program I’m looking for (and the one I promised many people we would watch this coming Friday night!)

And the best answer: There are 2 Fight Science specials, the first one contains Kung fu, Karate, TKD, BJJ, Muay Thai, etc.

The second special (which you own) is for Special ops, etc.

Here’s Fight Science 1 from veoh.com

But now where can I BUY the Fight Science 1 DVD? I really need it for this Friday – for about 80 people expecting it! Supposed to show it on a big screen TV. Can I buy it from that website, and I’m just not seeing that?? Thanks!
