Aikido Sparring: How Long Until I’m Able To Defend Myself?

How long do u think it will take before I am really able to defend myself against like a mugger or a bully etc. I want to you like be able to put him on the ground, no problem. I am talking about like a big guy but who is NOT trained to fight. Also will i learn some basic wrestling moves/pins after the sankyo or nikkyo? And how long do u think it will take to be able to spar with a trained fighter, not win, but at least give him/her competition.
* Please don’t say it depends on the dojo or something(I know it does, but would still like a time frame.
* I am not planning on quitting after the time you say, I am planning on continuing this throughout my life, I am 14
* I train about 2-4 times/week. it depends on my schedule.

Any other info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!

Kenpo Sparring Trouble?

I’m an orange belt in American Kenpo and I just recently started sparring and I ran into a couple problems.

1) I have trouble keeping track of both my opponents feet and hands. I start concentrating on one so much that my opponent does the opposite. (I watch their hands they get in a kick.)

2) I’m not really offensive. I don’t go in with punches and kicks, I just block and throw some punches when they come at me. I don’t go after them.

3) I am not very good at thinking on my feet.

How can I become better at watching their hands and feet as well as being more offensive instead of only defensive?

Jiu Jitsu Sparring: Do Japanese Jiu-Jitsu Dojos Normally Do Free Sparring?

I am trying to get an idea of how most Japanese Jiu-Jitsu dojos train. I am interested in taking a JJJ at a local dojo. I was wondering if anybody knows if they normally do free sparring like judo or brazillian jiu-jitsu does, full-contact, full resistance, to submission type.

The JJJ dojo I am looking at doesn’t. They just do step sparring. They do a random technique, you counter their techinque with one of your own, and he does the same, and so on.

Is this normaly how Japase Jiu-Jitsu dojos do things?

Krav Maga Sparring: All Purpose Chest-Protector For Grappling And Free-Sparring?

I train with a group in my tiny town and we are at a stage where we are practicing full contact.
Can anyone suggest a style or brand of chest-protector that allows for both grappling/floor work and stand-up fighting? We practice Krav Maga and free-style sparring in a number of disciplines, and the chest protectors we have are a little restrictive if the match goes to the ground.

Kenpo Sparring: How Much Kata Is There In Kenpo 5.0?

How many years would it take to master the art, and do effective sparring for street brawl? Anyone?
TO LionDancer and Shihan, next time you post, I would suggest not including your MA experience, as your post below just showed how ignorant both of you are. LionDancer, FYI, Kenpo 5.0 is the modified AMERICAN KENPO Karate, If you don’t live in the U.S., I would understand your ignorance. Shihan, it would be so unwise of you not to think out of the box. Street brawls cannot be avoided most times, and you will be a ‘saint’ if you were punched by someone and not retaliate. Dig?
