Whats the difference between kung fu and karate?

I heard that the new ‘karate kid’ movie was banned in an asian country because they say its not really karate. They think its kung fu. I may be wrong.

They have different origins, techniques, styles, symbols, etc. Plus both branch off inot several subcatagory. Like, karate isn’t just karate. There’s kempo, Shaolin Ch’uan Fa, etc. And I’m sure the same of kung fu, but I make no promises there.

  • Lloyd Christmas:

    kung fu is two words

  • Mr. Clever:

    I like both.

I think you actually should’ve posted this in the martial arts section lol

In the movie, Jackie Chan teaches Kung Fu to Jaden Smith. He watches Karate videos before he’s actually taught Kung Fu but that’s the only real reference to Karate in the movie.

It’s so ignorant, disrespectful, and a shame that the makers would call a Kung Fu movie ‘Karate Kid’

  • David Winter:

    >Kung Fu is Chinese martial arts whilst Karate is Korean martial arts.

  • ~!JaBBaFiEd!~:

  • Joey:

    Disciplines and Origins
Technically both karate and kung fu originated from china
However it was developed further into two individual styles by each country

Karate Kid is imho western mainstream hollywood martial arts.
